Webster Summary

Webster, Texas is a city located in Harris County, Texas, United States. The city is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Webster was 10,400.

History

The area that is now Webster was originally inhabited by the Karankawa Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The area was first known as "Gardens", and was later renamed "Gardens of Webster" after a local landowner, John Webster.
In 1879, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was built through the area, and the town was renamed "Webster" after John Webster. The town was officially incorporated in 1958.

Geography

Webster is located in southeastern Harris County at 29°33'25" North, 95°7'25" West (29.5569, -95.1237). It is bordered to the north by Clear Lake City, to the east by League City, to the south by Friendswood, and to the west by Houston.
The city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 8.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (1.2%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Webster is largely based on the oil and gas industry. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Chevron, Shell, and ExxonMobil.
In addition to the oil and gas industry, Webster is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The city is also home to several medical facilities, including Clear Lake Regional Medical Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,400 people, 4,093 households, and 2,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.3% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $68,945. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
