Wallis was founded in 1873 by a group of German immigrants led by John Wallis. The town was named after Wallis, who was a prominent local landowner. In 1881, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was built through Wallis, connecting it to Houston and other cities in the region. This allowed the town to grow and prosper.
In the early 1900s, Wallis was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. It had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and a post office. The town also had a school, churches, and a newspaper.
