History
Wallis was founded in 1873 by a group of German immigrants led by John Wallis. The town was named after Wallis, who was a prominent local landowner. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small trading center. In 1881, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was built through Wallis, connecting it to Houston and other cities in the region. This allowed the town to grow and prosper.
In the early 1900s, Wallis was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. It had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and a post office. The town also had a school, churches, and a newspaper.
In the 1920s, Wallis began to decline as the railroad industry declined. The population dropped to just over 500 people by the 1930s. The town continued to decline until the 1950s when it began to experience a resurgence. The population increased to 1,000 people by the 1960s.
