Valley View Summary

Valley View is a small town located in Cooke County, Texas, United States. It is situated along the Red River, approximately 20 miles north of Gainesville. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Valley View was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named for the view of the Red River Valley from the nearby hills. The first post office was established in 1877.
In 1881, the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the town, connecting it to Gainesville and other nearby towns. This allowed Valley View to become an important trading center for the surrounding area.
In the early 1900s, Valley View was a thriving community with several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a cotton gin, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a school, churches, and a newspaper.

Geography

Valley View is located at 33°45'25" North, 97°17'45" West (33.756944, -97.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Valley View's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce cotton, corn, wheat, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 393.2 per square mile (151.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 2.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
