Tom Bean Summary

Tom Bean is a small city located in Grayson County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 15 miles north of Sherman and about 75 miles north of Dallas. The city was named after Thomas Bean, a prominent local rancher and businessman. The population of Tom Bean was 1,541 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Tom Bean is located at 33°41'25" North, 96°25'45" West (33.690278, -96.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Tom Bean was founded in 1881 by Thomas Bean, a prominent rancher and businessman. The town was originally called Beanville, but the name was changed to Tom Bean in 1883. The town was incorporated in 1885.
Tom Bean was a thriving agricultural community in the early 1900s. Cotton was the main crop, and the town had several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also had a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and a general store.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the cotton industry declined. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy. In the 1940s, the town began to revive as the oil industry began to boom in the area.

Tom Bean's economy is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,541 people, 590 households, and 431 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 537.5 per square mile (207.7/km2).
