Sudan Summary

Sudan, Texas is a small town located in Lamb County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the Texas-New Mexico border, approximately 20 miles south of Littlefield and 25 miles north of Muleshoe. The population of Sudan, Texas was 1,093 as of the 2010 census.

History

Sudan, Texas was founded in 1909 by the Sudan Land and Cattle Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Kansas City, Missouri, who purchased a large tract of land in the area. The town was named after the Sudan Land and Cattle Company.
The town was incorporated in 1911 and the first mayor was J.W. Smith. The town grew quickly and by 1920, the population had grown to over 500.
The town was a major stop on the Santa Fe Railroad and was a hub for the local agricultural industry. The town also had a cotton gin, a bank, a hotel, a school, and several stores.

Geography

Sudan, Texas is located at 34°14'25"N 102°17'45"W (34.240278, -102.295833). The town is situated on the Texas-New Mexico border, approximately 20 miles south of Littlefield and 25 miles north of Muleshoe.
The town is located in the High Plains region of Texas and is part of the Llano Estacado. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The elevation of the town is 3,541 feet above sea level.
The climate in Sudan, Texas is semi-arid with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F and the average annual precipitation is 17.5 inches.
