Spearman Summary
Spearman is a city located in Hansford County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hansford County and is located in the Texas Panhandle. The population was 2,841 at the 2010 census.
History
Spearman was founded in 1909 and named after a local rancher, John Spearman. The town was originally located in Ochiltree County, but was moved to Hansford County in 1911. The town was incorporated in 1913.
Geography
Spearman is located at 35°59'25" North, 101°25'45" West (35.990278, -101.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Spearman's economy is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several large grain elevators, as well as a number of oil and gas production companies. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,841 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,093.2 people per square mile (808.2/km2). There were 1,269 housing units at an average density of 937.2 per square mile (362.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.53% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 17.90% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.45% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,958. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
