Smyer was founded in 1909 by a group of settlers from Oklahoma. The town was named after the first postmaster, J.W. Smyer. Smyer is located in Hockley County, Texas. It is situated about 20 miles northwest of Lubbock and is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located in the High Plains region of Texas and is surrounded by flat, open land. The town is located at an elevation of 3,000 feet and has an average annual temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
