Skidmore Summary

Skidmore is a small town located in Bee County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 30 miles south of Corpus Christi and about 20 miles north of Kingsville. The population of Skidmore was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Skidmore was founded in 1891 by the Skidmore family, who had moved to the area from Tennessee. The town was named after the family, and the first post office was established in 1892. The town was incorporated in 1909.
In the early 1900s, Skidmore was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and sorghum being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it and the population began to move away. The Great Depression further exacerbated the decline, and by the 1940s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

Geography

Skidmore is located at 28°45'25" North, 97°45'25" West (28.756944, -97.756944). It is situated in the Coastal Plains region of Texas, about 30 miles south of Corpus Christi and about 20 miles north of Kingsville.
The town is located on the banks of the Nueces River, which flows through the area. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

Economy

The economy of Skidmore is largely based on agriculture. Cotton, corn, and sorghum are the main crops, and there are also some cattle ranches in the area.
The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. There is also a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Skidmore was 1,092. The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races.
