Sinton was founded in 1874 by John Sinton, a rancher and former Confederate soldier. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1891. The town was originally located on the San Patricio-Aransas County line, but was moved to its current location in 1892.
The town was a major shipping point for cattle and cotton in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was also home to a large number of oil refineries and related industries.

Geography

Sinton is located at 28°41'25" North, 97°37'17" West (28.690278, -97.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.90% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.90% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.45% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
