Silverton Summary

Silverton is a small town located in Briscoe County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Salt Fork of the Brazos River, approximately 25 miles northwest of the county seat of Silverton. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Silverton was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Silverton. The town was named after the silver deposits that were discovered in the area. The first post office was established in 1877 and the town was incorporated in 1882.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900, it had a population of 1,000. The town was home to several businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
In the early 20th century, Silverton experienced a period of decline. The population dropped to just over 500 by 1930. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl further contributed to the town's decline.

Geography

Silverton is located at 34°25'25" North, 100°45'45" West (34.423, -100.7625). It is situated on the banks of the Salt Fork of the Brazos River, approximately 25 miles northwest of the county seat of Silverton.

Economy

The economy of Silverton is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, corn, wheat, and sorghum.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile. There were 233 housing units at an average density of 331.4 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 81.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 16.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,625, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,500 for females.
