Round Rock Summary

Round Rock, Texas is a city located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. It is a suburb of Austin, the state capital, and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History

Round Rock was founded in 1851 by settlers from the nearby communities of Brushy Creek and Hutto. The city was named after a large round rock that was found in the middle of Brushy Creek. The rock served as a landmark for travelers and settlers, and was used as a meeting place for local Native American tribes.
The city was incorporated in 1854 and has grown steadily since then. In the late 19th century, Round Rock was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, a cattle trail that ran from Texas to Kansas. The city was also home to the Round Rock Express, a minor league baseball team that played in the Texas League from 1888 to 1958.

Geography

Round Rock is located in central Williamson County, about 20 miles (32 km) north of downtown Austin. The city is situated on the Balcones Escarpment, a geological formation that runs through Central Texas. The city is bordered by the cities of Cedar Park to the west, Pflugerville to the north, and Hutto to the east.
The city has a total area of 25.9 square miles (67 km2), of which 25.8 square miles (67 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) is water. The city is located in the Blackland Prairie region of Central Texas, which is characterized by flat terrain and black, fertile soil.
