Petersburg Summary

Petersburg is a small town located in the northeast corner of Texas, in the county of Hale. It is situated on the banks of the Red River, and is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

Petersburg was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Petersburg, Illinois. The town was named after the original town in Illinois, and was originally intended to be a trading post for the local farmers. The town quickly grew, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural center.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel. The town was also home to a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1877.
In the early 1900s, the town was also home to a number of schools, including the Petersburg High School, which was founded in 1910. The school was later renamed the Petersburg Independent School District, and is still in operation today.
