History
The area around Overton was first settled in the early 1840s by pioneers from the United States and Europe. The town was founded in 1872 and named after William Overton, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1876 and a post office was established in 1877.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of 1,845. The economy was based on cotton farming and lumber production. The town was also home to several churches, schools, and businesses.
In the early 20th century, the economy shifted to oil production. The first oil well was drilled in Overton in 1921, and by the mid-1920s the town had become a major oil center. The population peaked at 3,000 in the 1930s.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,837 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 676.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 6.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
