The area that is now Odem was first settled in the late 1800s by German and Czech immigrants. The town was originally known as “Odem’s Switch”, named after the railroad switch that was located there. The town was officially incorporated in 1909 and the name was changed to Odem.

Odem is located at 28°45'25" North, 97°37'17" West (28.756944, -97.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Odem is largely based on agriculture and oil and gas production. The town is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as several oil and gas production facilities. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,039 people, 745 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races.
