Nome Summary

Nome is a city located in the state of Alaska, United States. It is the largest city in the Nome Census Area and the second largest city in the state. The city is located on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula, on the Bering Sea. The population of Nome was 3,598 at the 2010 census, up from 3,505 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Nome is located at 64°30′14″N 165°23′58″W (64.503889, -165.399444). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.6 square miles (56.0 km2), of which, 18.5 square miles (47.9 km2) of it is land and 3.1 square miles (8.1 km2) of it (14.37%) is water.
Nome is located on the southern coast of the Seward Peninsula, on the Bering Sea. The city is located on a small bay, which is protected by a sand spit. The city is surrounded by tundra and mountains. The city is located near the Nome-Council Airport, which is located about 5 miles (8 km) to the east.

History

Nome was founded in the late 19th century as a gold rush town. The town was originally called Anvil City, but was later renamed Nome after the nearby Nome River. The town quickly grew as prospectors flocked to the area in search of gold. By 1900, the population of Nome had grown to over 10,000 people.
The gold rush eventually ended, and the population of Nome began to decline. In the early 20th century, Nome became a center for fur trading and fishing. The city also became a major port for the Alaska Steamship Company.
In 1925, Nome was incorporated as a city. In the 1950s, the city began to experience a population boom as the military established a presence in the area. The military presence in Nome has since declined, but the city remains an important port for the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Economy

Nome’s economy is largely based on fishing, tourism, and government services. The city is home to several seafood processing plants, which process fish and shellfish caught in the Bering Sea. The city is also a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to experience the unique culture and scenery of the area.
The city is also home to several government offices, including the Nome City Hall, the Nome Public Library, and the Nome Police Department. The city is also home to the University of Alaska Nome, which offers a variety of degree programs.

As of the 2010 census, there were 3,598 people, 1,541 households, and 890 families residing in the city. The population density was 194.2 people per square mile (75.0/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 99.3 per square mile (38.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 66.2% White, 0.7% African American, 16.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 11.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,938. About 8.2% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
