Munday Summary

Munday is a small city located in Knox County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 90 miles northwest of Abilene and 120 miles southeast of Amarillo. The population of Munday was 1,541 at the 2010 census, up from 1,427 at the 2000 census.

History

Munday was founded in 1891 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after a railroad official, J.W. Munday. The first post office was established in 1892. The town was incorporated in 1909.

Geography

Munday is located at 33°25'25" North, 99°45'25" West (33.423, -99.757). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Munday is a small agricultural community. The main crops are cotton, wheat, and sorghum. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,427 people, 545 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 0.14% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 18.45% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.45% of the population.
