Mercedes Summary
Mercedes is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 15,570 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Mercedes was originally inhabited by the Coahuiltecan Indians. The first European to explore the area was Alonso de Leon in 1690. The area was later settled by ranchers and farmers in the late 19th century.
The city was founded in 1907 by the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. The city was named after Mercedes Perez, the daughter of a local rancher. The city was incorporated in 1910.
Geography
Mercedes is located at 26°10'25" North, 97°51'25" West (26.173611, -97.856944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Mercedes is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Ford Motor Company plant, a Caterpillar plant, and a General Motors plant. The city is also home to several large agricultural operations, including vegetable farms, citrus groves, and cattle ranches.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 14,811 people, 4,541 households, and 3,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.2 people per square mile (699.7/km2). There were 4,919 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per square mile (232.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 19.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 91.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.25 and the average family size was 3.71.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,945, and the median income for a family was $23,906. Males had a median income of $20,945 versus $15,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,845. About 33.2% of families and 37.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 45.2% of those under age 18 and 33.2% of those age 65 or over.
