Martindale Summary

Martindale, Texas is a small town located in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the San Marcos River, about 25 miles southeast of Austin. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Martindale was founded in 1854 by a group of German immigrants led by John Martindale. The town was originally called Martindale Station, and was a stop on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Martindale was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the railroad stopped running and the population began to move away. The town was nearly abandoned by the 1940s, but was revived in the 1950s when the San Marcos River was dammed to create Lake Dunlap.
