Mabank Summary
Mabank is a city located in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,364 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex.
History
Mabank was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Mabank, Tennessee. The town was named after the Tennessee town, which in turn was named after a Cherokee chief. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1881, the Houston and Texas Central Railway built a line through the town, which helped to spur growth. By 1890, the population had grown to 200. The town incorporated in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Mabank was a center for cotton production and processing. The town had a cotton gin, a cottonseed oil mill, and a cotton compress. The population peaked at 1,000 in the 1920s.

The town's economy is largely based on retail and services. The town has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,072 people, 790 households, and 590 families residing in the city. The population density was 945.2 people per square mile (364.7/km2). There were 863 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.90% White, 5.90% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.17% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,000. About 9.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
