Lometa Summary

Lometa is a small town located in Lampasas County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Lampasas River, about 25 miles northwest of the county seat of Lampasas. The population of Lometa was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Lometa was founded in 1882 by the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. The town was named after the daughter of a railroad official, Lometa Smith. The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Lometa was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, but other crops such as corn, wheat, and oats were also grown. The town also had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the railroad stopped running and the cotton industry declined. The population dropped from a high of 1,000 in 1920 to just over 500 in 1930.

Geography

Lometa is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 183 and State Highway 29, about 25 miles northwest of the county seat of Lampasas. The town is situated on the banks of the Lampasas River. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The climate is semi-arid with hot summers and mild winters.

The economy of Lometa is largely based on agriculture. Cotton is still the main crop, but other crops such as corn, wheat, and oats are also grown. The town also has a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
