Lefors Summary

Lefors is a small town located in Gray County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 25 miles east of Amarillo. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Lefors was founded in 1909 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after the Lefors family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1910.
In the early days, Lefors was a farming and ranching community. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
In the 1930s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression took its toll. The population dropped from a high of 1,000 in 1930 to just over 500 by 1940.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The population increased to over 1,000 by 1960. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a drug store, and a movie theater.

Geography

Lefors is located at 35°25'25" North, 100°45'17" West (35.423, -100.755). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lefors is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms and ranches, as well as a number of businesses.
The town is also home to a number of oil and gas companies, including Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Marathon Oil.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.7/km2).
