Karnes City was founded in 1894 by German immigrants who had settled in the area. The city was named after Henry Karnes, a hero of the Texas Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1911 and has since grown to become the largest city in Karnes County.

Geography

Karnes City is located at 28°58'25" North, 97°51'45" West (28.973611, -97.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Karnes City is the economic hub of Karnes County and the Eagle Ford Shale region. The city is home to several businesses, including oil and gas companies, manufacturing companies, and retail stores. The city is also home to the Karnes County Courthouse, which is the county seat.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,042 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.9 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 531.3 per square mile (205.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 19.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
