Jasper is a city located in Jasper County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,247 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jasper County and is situated in East Texas, approximately 130 miles northeast of Houston. Jasper is the principal city of the Jasper Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Jasper and Newton counties.

History

Jasper was founded in 1835 by settlers from Alabama and named after William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was incorporated in 1844 and became the county seat of Jasper County in 1846.
During the Civil War, Jasper was the site of a skirmish between Confederate and Union forces. The town was destroyed by fire in 1877, but was quickly rebuilt.
In the early 20th century, Jasper was a center of the timber industry, with several sawmills located in the area. The city also had a thriving agricultural sector, with cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes being the main crops.

Geography

Jasper is located at 30°55'25" North, 94°02'45" West (30.923750, -94.045862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Jasper's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several sawmills and lumber companies, as well as a number of agricultural businesses. The city also has a growing tourism industry, with several hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,247 people, 3,072 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,015.2 people per square mile (392.2/km2). There were 3,521 housing units at an average density of 433.3 per square mile (167.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 4.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,917. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
