Idalou Summary

Idalou is a small town located in Lubbock County, Texas. It is situated about 10 miles east of Lubbock and is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Idalou was 2,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Idalou was founded in 1909 by the Idalou Land and Townsite Company. The town was named after Ida Lou, the daughter of one of the founders. The town was originally a farming community, but in the 1920s, the cotton industry began to take off. By the 1940s, Idalou had become a major cotton-producing center.
In the 1950s, the town began to diversify its economy. The Idalou Independent School District was established in 1954, and the town began to attract new businesses. In the 1960s, the town was home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a cotton gin, a cottonseed oil mill, and a cottonseed meal plant.
