Henderson is located at 32°11′17″N 94°50′45″W (32.188133, -94.845862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.24%) is water.

History

Henderson was founded in 1843 by a group of settlers from Nacogdoches. The town was named after James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas. The town was incorporated in 1875 and became the county seat of Rusk County in 1879.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of 2,000. The town was a center of the timber industry, and it was also home to several cotton gins.
In the early 20th century, Henderson was a center of the oil industry. The town was home to several oil refineries and related businesses.

The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
