History

Harlingen was founded in 1904 by Lon C. Hill, who named the city after his hometown of Harlingen, Netherlands. The city was incorporated in 1910, and was initially a farming community. During World War II, the city was home to a large military base, and the population grew significantly. Harlingen is located in the southernmost part of Texas, in Cameron County. It is situated on the northern edge of the Rio Grande Valley, and is bordered by the cities of San Benito, Los Fresnos, and La Feria. The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city is located at an elevation of 33 feet above sea level.
