Gail Summary
Gail is a small town located in Borden County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Texas Panhandle, approximately 25 miles east of Lubbock. The population of Gail was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
Gail was founded in 1909 by the Gail Brothers, who were ranchers from Oklahoma. The town was named after their mother, Gail. The brothers opened a general store and post office in the town, and the post office was officially established in 1910.
In the early years, Gail was a farming and ranching community. The town was also home to a cotton gin, a bank, a hotel, and a school. The school was established in 1911 and was the first school in the area.
Geography
Gail is located at 33°45'25" North, 101°17'45" West (33.756944, -101.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Gail is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, and the surrounding area is known for its production of cotton, wheat, and sorghum.
Gail is also home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in Gail. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 327.1 per square mile (126.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 15.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.2% of the population.
