Denver City Summary

Denver City is a city located in Yoakum County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,479 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yoakum County.

History

Denver City was founded in 1909 by the Denver City Townsite Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Denver, Colorado, who wanted to capitalize on the oil boom in the area. The town was named after the investors' hometown. The first post office opened in 1909.
The town quickly grew as the oil industry flourished. By the 1920s, Denver City had become a major oil center, with several oil companies operating in the area. The town was incorporated in 1927.

Geography

Denver City is located at 33°14'25" North, 102°45'17" West (33.240278, -102.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Denver City is a major center for the oil and gas industry. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Apache Corporation, Chevron Corporation, and ConocoPhillips. The city is also home to several oilfield service companies, such as Halliburton and Schlumberger.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plant that produces plastic pipe for the oil and gas industry.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,479 people, 1,717 households, and 1,179 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,037.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 872.2 per square mile (337.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.45% White, 4.45% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 19.45% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.45% of the population.
