West Reading borough Summary

West Reading Borough is a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated on the Schuylkill River, approximately 10 miles northwest of Reading, the county seat. The borough has a population of 5,078 as of the 2010 census, and is part of the Greater Reading Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

West Reading was first settled in 1748 by German immigrants, and was incorporated as a borough in 1867. The borough was named for its location on the west side of the Schuylkill River. The area was originally part of the Reading Township, and was known as the “West End” of Reading.
The borough was an important industrial center in the 19th century, with several factories and mills located along the Schuylkill River. The Reading Railroad also had a major presence in the area, with a large freight yard and passenger station located in West Reading.

Geography

West Reading is located at 40°20'45" North, 75°57'45" West (40.3458, -75.9625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is bordered by the city of Reading to the east, Wyomissing Borough to the south, and Shillington Borough to the west. The Schuylkill River forms the northern boundary of the borough.

Economy

West Reading is a primarily residential community, with a small commercial district located along Penn Avenue. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
The borough is also home to several industrial parks, including the West Reading Industrial Park and the West Reading Business Park. These parks are home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution companies.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,078 people, 2,093 households, and 1,269 families residing in the borough. The population density was 7,093.3 people per square mile (2,737.2/km2). There were 2,269 housing units at an average density of 3,179.3 per square mile (1,227.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 91.2% White, 3.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,972. Males had a median income of $36,944 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
