West Hamburg Summary

History

West Hamburg, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, just north of the city of Reading. The borough was founded in 1845 and was originally known as Hamburg. The name was changed to West Hamburg in 1876 to distinguish it from the nearby borough of Hamburg.
The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The first settlers were mostly farmers, but the area soon became a center for industry. The first industry in the area was a grist mill, which was built in 1810. This was followed by a sawmill, a tannery, and a woolen mill.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1845 and the first mayor was elected in 1846. The population of the borough grew steadily throughout the 19th century, reaching a peak of 1,845 in 1900.

Geography

West Hamburg is located in southeastern Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Schuylkill Valley, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains. The borough is bordered to the north by the city of Reading, to the east by the borough of Hamburg, to the south by the borough of Shillington, and to the west by the borough of Wyomissing.
The borough covers an area of 1.2 square miles and is located at an elevation of 441 feet above sea level. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.

Economy

West Hamburg’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The borough is home to several factories, including a paper mill, a printing plant, and a plastics factory. There are also several retail stores in the borough, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
The borough also has a thriving tourism industry. The nearby Schuylkill River is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities. The borough also hosts several annual festivals, including the West Hamburg Fall Festival and the West Hamburg Summer Festival.
