Trooper Summary
Trooper is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in the Upper Merion Township, and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Trooper was 4,819.
History
The area now known as Trooper was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century, and the area was officially established as a township in 1704. The area was named after a local Native American chief, Chief Trooper.
In the late 19th century, the area began to experience rapid growth and development, as the railroad and other transportation networks were built. This led to the establishment of several businesses and industries in the area, including a paper mill, a brickyard, and a sawmill.
Geography
Trooper is located at 40°7'25"N 75°20'45"W (40.123611, -75.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Trooper is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to several restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. There are also several industrial and manufacturing businesses located in the area.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,819 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,717.3 people per square mile (1,433.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 1,491.2/sq mi (575.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $68,958. Males had a median income of $45,938 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,845. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
