Templeton, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Allegheny River Valley, approximately 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The population of Templeton was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Templeton was founded in 1845 by William Templeton, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Templeton Station, as it was a stop on the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Templeton was a thriving industrial center, with several coal mines, brickyards, and other industries. The town was also home to several churches, a school, and a post office.

Geography

Templeton is located at 40°51'N 79°37'W (40.851, -79.619). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Templeton's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, as well as several wineries and vineyards. The town also has several restaurants, antique shops, and other small businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.6 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
