Springdale borough Summary

Springdale Borough is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the northeast corner of the county, just south of the city of Pittsburgh. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Cheswick and Harmarville, and by the townships of Fawn and Indiana. The population of Springdale Borough was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Springdale Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The first settlers were the families of John and Jacob Schaeffer, who purchased land in the area in 1790. The Schaeffer family built a grist mill and a saw mill on the banks of the Allegheny River, and the area became known as Schaefferstown.
In 1845, the Schaeffer family sold the land to a group of investors who formed the Springdale Manufacturing Company. The company built a cotton mill and a woolen mill on the banks of the Allegheny River, and the area became known as Springdale. The mills provided employment for many of the local residents, and the population of the borough grew rapidly.
In 1876, the borough was incorporated as Springdale Borough. The borough was named after the Springdale Manufacturing Company, which was the largest employer in the area at the time.

Geography

Springdale Borough is located at 40°33'25" North, 79°53'45" West (40.556944, -79.895833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Allegheny River Valley, and is bordered by the boroughs of Cheswick and Harmarville, and by the townships of Fawn and Indiana. The borough is located approximately 10 miles northeast of the city of Pittsburgh.

Economy

The economy of Springdale Borough is largely based on manufacturing. The borough is home to several factories and industrial plants, including the Springdale Manufacturing Company, which is the largest employer in the borough. Other major employers in the borough include the Springdale Steel Company, the Springdale Foundry, and the Springdale Machine Works.
The borough also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 976.7 per square mile (377.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,917. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
