Portland borough Summary

Borough of Portland Pennsylvania

The Borough of Portland is located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in the Lehigh Valley region of the state, approximately 8 miles north of Easton and 8 miles south of Allentown. The borough is part of the Easton-Bethlehem-Phillipsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Portland was 1,845.

History

The area that is now Portland was first settled in 1737 by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Hoffman’s Ferry”, named after the ferry service that operated on the Lehigh River. In 1810, the town was officially incorporated as the Borough of Portland.
The town was an important stop on the Lehigh Canal, which was built in the early 19th century to transport coal from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia. The canal was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it provided a reliable means of transportation for goods and people.

Portland is located at 40°41'17" North, 75°17'45" West (40.6879, -75.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Lehigh River Valley, approximately 8 miles north of Easton and 8 miles south of Allentown.
