Paradise Summary

Paradise, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, approximately 20 miles east of the city of Lancaster. The borough is bordered by East Lampeter Township to the north, West Lampeter Township to the east, and Leacock Township to the south and west. The population of Paradise was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Paradise was first settled in the early 1700s by German immigrants. The first settlers were members of the Mennonite Church, and the area was known as Mennonite Paradise. The name was changed to Paradise in 1815 when the post office was established.
The borough was incorporated in 1845. At the time, the main industry was farming, and the town was known for its production of wheat, corn, and other grains. In the late 1800s, the town began to grow as a center for the production of furniture and other wood products.

Geography

Paradise is located at 40°7'17" North, 76°14'45" West (40.1214, -76.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Paradise is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a furniture store, a bakery, and a hardware store. The town also has a number of restaurants and shops.
Tourism is an important part of the local economy. The town is home to several historic sites, including the Paradise Mennonite Meetinghouse, which was built in 1790. The town also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the annual Paradise Fall Festival.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.6 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
