History
Palmerton Borough was founded in 1868 by Charles Palmer, a Philadelphia businessman. The borough was named after him. Palmerton was originally a small farming community, but it grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the development of the nearby zinc and iron ore mines. The borough was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Palmerton was a major center of zinc production in the United States. The zinc industry was the primary employer in the borough until the late 1970s, when the mines began to close. The last zinc mine in the borough closed in 1982.
