New Castle Summary
New Castle, Pennsylvania is a city located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the county seat of Lawrence County and is located along the Shenango River. The city is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 23,273, making it the largest city in Lawrence County.
History
New Castle was founded in 1802 by James Heaton, a settler from New Jersey. The city was named after New Castle, Delaware, which was the nearest large city at the time. The city was incorporated as a borough in 1825 and as a city in 1871.
In the late 19th century, New Castle was a major center of the steel industry. The city was home to several steel mills, including the Shenango Valley Steel Company, which was founded in 1892. The city was also home to several other industries, including glass and pottery factories.

New Castle is located at 41°00'N 80°22'W (41.00, -80.36). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,273 people, 9,945 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,867.3 people per square mile (1,106.2/km2). There were 10,945 housing units at an average density of 1,346.3 per square mile (519.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
