Morrisdale Summary

Morrisdale is a small borough located in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the western part of the state, approximately 70 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The population of Morrisdale was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Morrisdale was founded in 1872 by William Morris, a Welsh immigrant who had come to the United States in search of a better life. He purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it into a small town. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1873.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving community. The town was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a general store, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Geography

Morrisdale is located in western Clearfield County at 40°51'25" North, 78°37'45" West (40.8569, -78.6293). It is in the valley of the West Branch Susquehanna River, which forms the western boundary of the borough.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Morrisdale’s economy is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is heavily forested. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 676.6 per square mile (261.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,000. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
