Middletown Summary

Middletown, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Middletown was founded in 1755 by a group of German settlers led by Peter Klein. The town was originally called Middle's Town, after the family of John Middle, who owned the land on which the town was built. The name was later changed to Middletown.
The town was incorporated in 1828 and became a borough in 1874. Middletown was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to a number of prominent abolitionists.

Geography

Middletown is located at 40°14′N 76°45′W (40.23, -76.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Middletown is home to a number of businesses, including a number of manufacturing companies. The largest employer in the borough is the Middletown Area School District, which employs over 1,000 people. Other major employers include the Middletown Area Public Library, Middletown Borough, and the Middletown Area Historical Society.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,901 people, 3,717 households, and 2,323 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,220.3 people per square mile (2,009.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 2,310.3 per square mile (892.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,945. About 6.3% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
