Maytown Summary

Maytown is a small borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the Susquehanna River, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Lancaster. The population of Maytown was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Maytown was founded in 1750 by a group of German settlers who had recently arrived in the area. The town was named after the May family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small industrial center. The first industry in Maytown was a grist mill, which was built in 1760. The mill was followed by a sawmill, a tannery, and a distillery.
In the late 19th century, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The railroad arrived in 1872, and the town was incorporated in 1876. The railroad allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area. The town also became a popular tourist destination, as it was located near several popular attractions, such as the Susquehanna River and the nearby Amish Country.

Geography

Maytown is located at 40°7'17" North, 76°20'45" West (40.1214, -76.3458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.
