Lawrence Summary

Lawrence, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the Shenango River and is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan area. The population of Lawrence was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Lawrence was first settled in 1796 by a group of settlers from New Jersey. The town was originally known as "Newton", but was later renamed "Lawrence" in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The town was officially incorporated in 1834.
Lawrence was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the town's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. The town was also home to a number of abolitionists, including the prominent Quaker, John Rankin.

Geography

Lawrence is located at 41°14'N 80°20'W (41.23, -80.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lawrence is largely based on manufacturing and services. The town is home to several factories, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The town also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,072.3 people per square mile (1,569.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 1,711.4 per square mile (661.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $33,958, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,944 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
