HopeWell Borough is a small borough located in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, and is bordered by Lawrence Township to the north, Hopewell Township to the east, and East Windsor Township to the south and west. History
The area that is now Hopewell Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of Quakers from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The area was originally known as “Quaker Hill”, and was part of Hopewell Township. In 1845, the area was incorporated as a borough, and was named after the nearby Hopewell Presbyterian Church.
The borough was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to several prominent abolitionists, including William Still and Levi Coffin. During the Civil War, the borough was home to a large number of Union soldiers, and was the site of several skirmishes.
