History

Gibsonia was founded in 1832 by William Gibson, a Scottish immigrant who had come to the United States in 1820. He purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it for farming. The area was known as Gibson's Crossroads, and the name was eventually changed to Gibsonia.
In 1854, the Pittsburgh and Butler Plank Road was built through the area, connecting Pittsburgh to Butler. This helped to spur the growth of the area, and by the late 19th century, Gibsonia had become a thriving agricultural community.
In the early 20th century, the area began to experience a population boom as people moved to the area from Pittsburgh and other parts of Pennsylvania. The population of Gibsonia grew from 1,000 in 1900 to over 8,000 by the year 2000.

Geography

Gibsonia is located at 40°35'17" North, 79°59'45" West (40.5879, -79.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Gibsonia is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Pittsburgh for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few retail stores.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,123 people, 3,093 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 976.3 people per square mile (377.3/km2). There were 3,223 housing units at an average density of 388.3/sq mi (149.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.90% White, 0.50% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $68,958. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $32,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
