Friedensburg Summary

Friedensburg is a small borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southern part of the county, about 10 miles south of Pottsville. The population of Friedensburg was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Friedensburg was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants who had settled in the area. The name of the borough is derived from the German word for “peace”. The original settlers were mostly farmers and the area was known for its coal mining. The first post office was established in 1848 and the first school was built in 1851.
The borough was incorporated in 1872 and the first mayor was elected in 1873. The first church was built in 1875 and the first fire company was established in 1876. The first newspaper, the Friedensburg Herald, was published in 1877.

Geography

Friedensburg is located at 40°41'17" North, 76°14'45" West (40.6879, -76.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Friedensburg’s economy is largely based on agriculture and coal mining. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
