Dunlo Summary

Dunlo is a small borough located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, approximately seven miles east of Johnstown. The population of Dunlo was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Dunlo was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Irish immigrants. The town was originally known as “Dunlow”, after the nearby Dunlow Creek. The name was later changed to “Dunlo”. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Dunlo was a thriving coal mining town. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town’s residents. The town also had a number of stores, churches, and other businesses.

Geography

Dunlo is located at 40°25'45" North, 78°51'45" West (40.429167, -78.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Dunlo is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The town also has a number of bed and breakfasts, which attract visitors from all over the region.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile. There were 471 housing units at an average density of 781.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 98.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
