Borough of Denver Pennsylvania

The Borough of Denver, Pennsylvania is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the county, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Lancaster. The borough is bordered by East Cocalico Township to the north, West Cocalico Township to the east, Adamstown Borough to the south, and Brecknock Township to the west. The population of Denver was 2,945 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now the Borough of Denver was first settled in 1720 by Mennonites from Germany. The town was originally known as Reamstown, after the Ream family who were among the first settlers. The town was renamed Denver in 1855, after the city of Denver, Colorado. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1864.

Geography

Denver is located at 40°10'17" North, 76°7'17" West (40.1714, -76.1214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Denver is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a feed mill, a furniture store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard. The town is also home to several restaurants and a few small retail stores.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,457.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
