History

Croydon was first settled in 1683 by William Biles, who purchased land from William Penn. The area was originally known as Biles’ Landing, and was later renamed Croydon after a town in England. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Croydon was an important port on the Delaware River in the 19th century. It was a major shipping point for coal, lumber, and other goods. The town was also home to several factories, including a paper mill, a brickyard, and a sawmill.

Geography

Croydon is located at 40°7′45″N 75°2′45″W (40.129167, -75.045278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Croydon’s economy is largely based on small businesses and light industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few light industrial businesses, including a printing company and a plastics manufacturer.

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,717 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the borough. The population density was 7,093.3 people per square mile (2,737.2/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 3,093.3 per square mile (1,192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,917. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $31,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
