Conyngham borough Summary

Conyngham Borough is a small borough located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Wyoming Valley, approximately five miles south of Wilkes-Barre. The borough was incorporated in 1876 and has a population of 1,717 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Conyngham Borough was originally inhabited by the Susquehannock Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The town was originally known as “Conyngham’s Valley” after the Conyngham family, who were among the first settlers. The town was officially incorporated as a borough in 1876.
In the late 1800s, the town was a major coal mining center. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town’s residents. The town also had a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a tannery, and a sawmill.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the coal industry declined. The town’s population decreased from a peak of 2,500 in 1910 to 1,717 in 2010.
