Commodore Summary
Commodore is a small borough located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, approximately 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The population of Commodore was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Commodore was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Scotch-Irish immigrants. The town was originally known as "Mudtown" due to the muddy roads that were common in the area. In 1845, the town was renamed Commodore in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero of the War of 1812.
The town was incorporated in 1876 and was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a tannery, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
Geography
Commodore is located at 40°41'45" North, 79°17'45" West (40.695833, -79.295833). The borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and is surrounded by the townships of East Mahoning, West Mahoning, and Washington. The Mahoning Creek flows through the borough.
Economy
