Columbus Summary

Columbus is a borough located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Columbus was first settled in 1796 by John and Mary McCreight. The town was originally known as McCreightstown, but was later renamed Columbus in 1820 in honor of Christopher Columbus. The town was incorporated in 1832.

Geography

Columbus is located at 40°41'17" North, 80°20'45" West (40.6879, -80.3458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Columbus is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The town is home to several factories, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 817 households, and 545 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 871 housing units at an average density of 1,377.2 per square mile (531.2/km2).
